Programme Highlights
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in
the availability and adoption of electronic and wireless devices for both
personal and industrial use. The advent of Internet-of-Things (IoT) has further
increased connectivity of devices to change business models across various
industries as well as to improve the daily lives of people. However, this kind
of technological revolution has also contributed to the electromagnetic
pollution.
Environmental and occupational health risks are increasingly
a focus of public concern. It is important to limit and control the exposure of
non-ionizing radiation (NIR) at domestic and industrial areas. Nowadays in Hong
Kong, such increase in awareness of health hazards associated with exposure to
non-ionizing radiation has driven higher demand on electromagnetic field measurement.
The aim of this technical seminar is to discuss the myths
and facts about NIR and to share information related to International
Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), which provides
scientific advice and guidance on the health and environmental effects of NIR
to protect people and the environment from detrimental NIR exposure.
ICNIRP, a main contributor to the international scientific
NIR dialogue and the advancement of NIR protection, gives recommendations on
limiting exposure for the frequencies in the different NIR subgroups. It
develops and publishes Guidelines, Statements, and reviews used by regional,
national, and international radiation protection bodies, such as the World
Health Organization.
