Hong kong International Terminals Limited (HIT) pioneered a
remote operation system of rail-mounted gantry cranes at its terminal back in
2012. In late 2013, HIT started to configure 29 rubber-tyred gantry cranes
(RTGCs), which had been manually operated by crane operators from crane cabins,
into remote-controlled cranes. Simultaneously, it introduced an automated
container stacking system. Both major developments took place at Container
Terminal 9 North.
The completion of the project marked the first time in the
world for a container terminal to transit RTGCs to a remote-controlled and
automated stacking system while maintaining full operations. It reinforces the
competitiveness of the Hong Kong Port while enhancing efficiency, occupational
safety and the working environment of crane operators.
The completion of the remote RTGCs project sets a remarkable
milestone for Hong Kong’s container port industry. The speaker will share with
the participants the HIT team’s experience over this exceptional journey,
challenges as well as the solutions of the story of this innovative project.

About the Speaker
Ir WONG Lek Heng, Simon is currently the General Manager of Engineering at
HIT and the Engineering Director of HPH Trust. He first joined HIT in 1997 and
spent most of his time in overseeing the engineering function of HIT. He had
also been the General Manager of Engineering at Yantian for more than three
years. Simon holds a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Engineering. He
is a Chartered Engineer of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a member
of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. He is also a member of the
Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.
